Prices Quilt Prep

$40 minimum quilting charge. Other services are in addition to the quilting charge. Prices are subject to change without notice.

The quilting charges are figured on the square-inch area of the item and the difficulty quotient. Larger or more open quilting designs, which take less time to quilt, are priced less per square inch than designs that are very tight or intricate. Custom quilting can take many hours to stitch and is therefore priced at a higher per-square-inch rate than pantograph (edge-to-edge) quilting.

Square-inch area is figured by multiplying the quilt length measurement in inches to the quilt width measurement in inches.

Pantographs also called edge-to-edge
Group 1 : large and medium scale designs are 1½ ₵ (.015) per square inch.
Group 2: small or intricate designs are 2₵ (.02) per square inch.

Custom quilting: any quilting other than edge-to-edge. Freehand starts at 2¼ ₵ (.0225) per square inch and goes up to over 6₵ (.06)per square inch for heirloom style that would include techniques such as trapunto, cross-hatching, micro-stippling and other time consuming quilting.

Any quilting design requiring the quilt to be turned on the machine will cost $15 per turning.

Thread changes are $3 for each additional thread color in excess of the 2 colors included in the base price. Variegated threads cost an additional 1/10₵ (.001) per square inch as their purchase cost is twice the amount of solid color threads.

Binding preparation is $20 per hour, attaching the binding to quilt front by machine costs $1.25 per linear foot, machine-stitching binding down on the back costs $1.25 per linear foot, and hand-stitching the binding on the back costs $2.50 per linear foot. Hanging sleeves cost $2.50 a linear foot and are machine sewn into the binding seam and hand sewn to the back.

Icy Swan carries an assortment of battings for sale which includes, but isn’t limited to Hobbs 80/20, Hobbs Wool, Warm & Natural and Warm Blend.

Other services are charged at $20 per hour: binding preparation, backing preparation, squaring up backings, ironing tops/backings, repairing seams, etc.

To calculate an estimate of quilting costs multiply the square-inch area by the price. On a quilt 45” wide and 60” long being quilted with a Group 1 pantograph the equation would be: 45” x 60” x .015 = $40.50
